There are three
separate police forces in Spain; the Guardia Civil who wear green
uniforms and are responsible for customs, national security and
crowd control, and have an arm that deals with traffic, the National
Police in black or blue uniforms with white shirts, and deal with
criminal investigations, including theft, and lastly the Municipal
Police who take care of parking and traffic control in local municipal
areas. All three police forces are armed. If you are stopped by
the police make sure you have paper identification with you.
If you are
robbed while you are in Spain, you must go to the National Police
in order to file a report (denuncia) and get the necessary paperwork
for your insurance company and bank.
In the case
of medical emergencies, treatment at hospitals is free for citizens
of member states of the European Union in possession of an E111
form. Treatment can otherwise be very expensive and it is advisable
to have insurance with cover for medical emergencies when travelling.
English speaking doctors can be found via the local consulate, police
or chemist (farmacia).
